Orange County Chavivim Reattaches a Detached Trailer on Route 17
Featured vehicle: KJ-503 — Pickup Truck — Gas & Recovery
A trailer came off its tow vehicle on Route 17 between exits 131 and 130 overnight. Orange County Chavivim rolled out, worked the scene with the NY State Police, got the trailer reattached and properly secured, and put the driver back on the road.
A Trailer Down on Route 17
A detached trailer on a 65-mph corridor isn't a fender-bender — it's a moving hazard for every vehicle behind it. The driver pulled to the shoulder; we got the call.
State Police Holds the Road
NY State Police arrived in force and shut the lanes down behind the scene so we could work the rig safely. Cars behind backed up — and stayed backed up — until everything was buttoned up and rolling again.
Side by Side with NYSP
This is the partnership in practice — our recovery rig and a state trooper's pickup parked nose-to-tail on the shoulder, lights bouncing off the wet asphalt, both crews moving in sync.
Working in the Glow of the Lights
Our member walked the scene, set the staging, and got hands on the hitch. Trailer up, alignment checked, hitch dropped, safety chains crossed, breakaway cable wired, lights tested. Nothing exciting — just every step in the right order.
Properly Secured, Driver on Their Way
Once everything was reattached and verified secure, NYSP cleared the lanes, the driver pulled back onto Route 17, and the convoy on the shoulder packed up. No fanfare. The road reopened, and the night kept moving.
Why We Show Up
A volunteer recovery rig on a state highway in the middle of the night is the kind of help most drivers never imagine they'll need — until they do. Tonight that driver got home. Tomorrow it'll be someone else's call.
Big thank-you to the troopers from NY State Police who worked this one with us. We'll see you on the next.
