It's a corner that stays busy — and on Friday it saw two separate crashes within minutes of each other at NY-208 and Orange & Rockland Road in Monroe. Chavivim Orange County worked both, running traffic control and helping the response agencies on scene.
The First Crash
At about 12:45 PM, a Chavivim Orange County member was passing the intersection when they came upon a two-vehicle crash with injuries. The member called 911, requested additional Chavivim units for traffic control, and stayed to help secure the scene until first responders arrived.
KJ-501 and members KJ-25, KJ-52, KJ-59, KJ-81, KJ-101, and KJ-131 set up traffic control around the scene. It's a busy stretch where the Route 17 ramps meet several local roads, so keeping the crash safe meant managing traffic across more than one approach while crews worked.
Monroe Fire Department, Monroe EMS, and the New York State Police all responded. EMS evaluated and treated those hurt in the crash, firefighters handled the fluid spill and cleanup, and the troopers managed the roadway and investigation.
Once the scene was cleared, the roadway reopened. From the first 911 call to cleanup, the agencies had worked it together for about an hour.
Minutes Later — A Second Crash at the Same Corner
Barely five minutes after the last unit cleared, a second crash happened at the very same intersection. Our members — many of them still in the area — were right back on scene, this time alongside Monroe Fire Department, Monroe EMS, Kiryas Joel Hatzalah, the Monroe Police Department, and the New York State Police.
The same members who had just worked the first crash — KJ-25, KJ-52, KJ-59, KJ-81, KJ-101, and KJ-131 — were joined by KJ-104, KJ-111, KJ-128, and Rockland's R-176, with the KJ-503 pickup also responding.
Monroe Automotive and Collision On The Go towed the damaged vehicles, and once the second scene was cleared the road was reopened for good. Two crashes, one corner, minutes apart — and the same volunteers stayed on it from start to finish.
Thank you to Monroe Fire Department, Monroe EMS, Kiryas Joel Hatzalah, the Monroe Police Department, and the New York State Police for the teamwork — and to our members for staying on the corner through both calls.
